CLEAN UP YOUR WHET STONE!

June 9, 2003
If you have a whet stone that has a sway or trough worn in it or if you have a stone that is just loaded up, here is a quick fix:

Take the aluminum oxide grit from dressing a grinding wheel. Make sure the grit is good and clean (no swarf *). For large stones, place about 1 level teaspoonfull of grit on a SMOOTH unpainted concrete floor and spread evenly. With medium firm pressure begin lapping in a figure 8 motion. This procedure works on hard or soft stones, large or small. Be careful, this works pretty quick. You won't believe your eyes! When finished, return stone to can (see save your can!) with a kerosene cleaner.

* When dressing grinding wheel, place a paper towel behind the dressing tool to collect grit. If you don't produce a lot of aluminum oxide grit in your shop, find someone who does. There might be a crankshaft grinding shop in your area or someone who just does a lot of surface grinding.
