MORE WORKHOLDING

April 12, 2004
Even Out Your Vise. When squaring the ends of small parts that take up less than half the width of your vise jaw, even the best machine vise won't hold a part square. This is due to the machine clearances on the working surfaces of the moveable vise jaw. To remedy this situation, place a part of equal thickness at the opposite end of the vise jaw opening before clamping the part to be squared. This will keep the moveable jaw parallel to the stationary jaw and do a much better job of holding your part square. (see photo below)

Holding Irregular Shaped Parts. One of the handiest things that I have for workholding is a piece of round nylon. I have pieces that range in diameter from 3/8 of an inch to 1 inch and from 3" long to 24" long. Nylon is a tough, resiliant and relativly soft material. These characteristics are the reason Nylon works so well in this type of setup The photos below heavy milling cuts being taken on angle iron. Round Nylon also works well for holding heavy sections of steel (chunks) that have irregular saw cuts or are not square. These photos are fairly self explanatory and I will have more photos in the near future, but trust me, once you try using this set-up, you will wonder how you ever got by without it.

An Easy Polishing Set-up. Look at the images below, the first one shows powder coat overspray on the stem of our Vise Lift angle plate. This was on a working surface and the overspray needed to be removed in order to make the part functional. I tried to remove the overspray using a buffing wheel but it was too time consuming and it didn't do a very good job. Read the text below each image for an explanation. Nothing real fancy, but it may work for you someday.
